about

Cairn O' Mount - Traditional

Once a major crossing point for travelers coming over the Grampians to the Deeside and into Northern Scotland, Cairn O’ Mount is an ancient mountain pass in Aberdeenshire which has, among other things, informed a poem originally published as ‘Donald, a ballad’ in 1820 by Alexander Balfour (1767-1829). In its life as a ballad, it has also been known as “Clochnaben” and “Scotland’s Queen,” among other titles. It was quite popular in the rural north-east of Scotland from the mid-19th century with sung versions receiving mentions as early as 1847. The inclusion of the ballad in Robert Ford’s 'Vagabond songs and ballads of Scotland, with many old and familiar melodies' (1899) secured documentation for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
