about

What If I Never Speed?/Come Again - John Dowland (1563-1626)

John Dowland was born in either London or Dublin, depending on which source best fits a particular narrative (the composer’s own words in a dedication of his song "From Silent Night" to 'my loving countryman Mr. John Forster the younger, merchant of Dublin in Ireland’ could serve as the best source for those desiring an Irish birth). His music was widely published in London, and he spent much time there on frequent leave from his lucrative appointment to the court of music enthusiast Christian IV of Denmark in 1598. Overstaying once too often, Dowland was dismissed in 1606, finishing his career as one of several lutenists employed by James VI and I from 1612 until his death in 1626.
